Where to RV or Tent Camp in New Jersey… Turkey Swamp Family Campground in Freehold
Ok, so it is only 15 minutes from home and I have been here in every season, from the heat of Summer to a foot of snow, for more years than I care to retell, but it wasn’t until we were searching for that nearby place to take our new ( to us!) RV for a quick “first night out” that we began to realize what gem this place is!
They have lots of sites, and each and every one is a pull through, but they are separated by enough trees to make you feel like you are really getting back to nature. All sites have electricity and water, a fire ring and picnic table.
They have a dump station, a great little lake, rental canoes and paddle boats, super trails (none too hard for weekend hikers!), and are within 5 minutes of a Walmart, food stores, fantastic restaurants on Main Street Freehold and darn near anything else one might ever want or need!
What we liked was that the rangers placed the families with kids closest to the bathroom/showers and playground area and the twosomes, like us!, farther out so that even though it was early on the Fourth of July weekend, there was really no noise to speak of! (No offense to folks with kiddies, but we have none and don’t always find other peoples’ kids as delightful as they do! Besides, we pay our dues by living next to a day care center and paying a cornucopia of taxes to our local schools for your kids educations… so afford us a weekend of nature, peace and quiet. OK?). I think that this makes it a nicer experience for all.
The name is apt, there are large swamps nearby, so do bring lots of mosquito repellent of choice. But, heck,if you’ve been to New Jersey in the Summertime, then you already know about that!
